Two For The Road - Interweaving several different roadtrips in a couple's relationship this flick shows the good and bad of a relationship.Audrey Hepburn & Albert Finney play the main couple in this 1966 flick. It is nice to see a relationship movie that feels vaguely real .Some interesting anachronisms - like cigarette girls on planes and hitchhiking without fear of serial killers. B+
Eulogy - over the top look at a dysfunctional family preparing to bury their father and dealing with each other- inconsistent. With Ray Ramano,Famke Jannsen,Piper Laurie,Hank Azaria,Kelly Preston,Rip Torn and others. C-
The 50 Worst Movies Ever Made - seems to be a made on the cheap compilation of trailers for 50 truly terrible flicks- I enjoy bad flicks and was hoping for a decent documentary on some of these turkeys -sadly this 60 minute comp just featured a guy with a vaguely wacky voice talking over the trailers for the movies and no movie not even the top movie got more than 2 minutes of coverage. It is neat to watch for the bad effects and stuff- but not that informative C-
Bret Hart:The Best There Was/The Best There Is/The Best There Ever Will Be - while the current WWE product is suffering in quality and popularity- the DVDs continue to be excellent. This 3 DVD set features a 2 hour history of Bret's wrestling career with clips from his pre WWF days all the way til his troubled tenure in WCW.What makes this set a wrestling fan's dream is the 7 hours of extra matches including his great match with Owen Hart @ WM X, his match against the British Bulldog @ SummerSlam 92 in front of 80,000 people and even better matches against great workers like Rickey"The Dragon" Steamboat. A great edition to any wrestling fans library. A

Thu, November 24, 2005 - 5:49 AMMurderball - a look at the paralympic sport quad rugby and the athletes who participate in the game.Inspirational, funny and enthralling - well worth the 90 minutes. The DVD has commentaries by the players and the filmmakers plus a special MTV Jackass segment with the players. Thu, November 24, 2005 - 10:47 PMHavoc:Unrated - former Disney gal Anne Hathaway is a rich Cali gal looking to spice up her life by heading downtown and hanging with some Latino drug-dealers.She is joined by Bijou Philips and the shocking drug use and sexcapades ensue- this uneven movie felt like a combo of after-school special,a sequel to 13 or a followup to James Toback's Black & White . Sky High - Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston are superhero parents in this cute Disney flick about a Super Hero high school .The movie had some cute ideas and was fun to watch- but it was hindered by an all 80's covers soundtrack and predictability. C

Mon, November 28, 2005 - 9:05 AMThis Week's Rentals....
Steven Spielberg's updated verion of War Of The World's...I was very pleasently surprised at how good this movie was! Originally I was turned off to the Tom Cruz acting like a total dork with Katie Holmes thing and also thinking that the movie was in no way going to be as good as the campy 1950's George Pal Version...I was wrong :)
Undead...A totally cheesey and campy Australian Zombie Movie..watch it only if your into or in the frame of mind to watch something silly!!
Kung Fu Hustle....this movie is really funny!! The story line and the fight scenes and the campiness of it all is terrific!!
Stealth.....Ummmmm, total mindless entertainment with Josh Lucas, Jamie Foxx and the luscious Jessica Biel...special effects are cool and it is an interesting concept....but the very end of the movie?? Be warned, I thouhgt it sucked.
High Tension...THIS movie is a total holy shit, what the fuck is going on, intense, sick ass gorefess..it is European made and the ending leaves you with a Holy Shit what the fuck?!?! type feeling -

Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Mon, November 28, 2005 - 2:30 PMFantastic Four -- Worst comic to screen ever. Really. Worse than Daredevil. If this was the first comic to screen movie no one would have ever made another. Mind boggling stupid in the first five minutes and it goes downhill from there. That's not even counting the required suspension of disbelief to allow super powers from radiation. 5 toes way down.
The Island -- Or as some know it, Clonus Horror Redux. Not as horrible as I heard but not good either. Clones of people in the real world created for spare parts live their lives in what they believe is a post apocalyptic enclosed city. One figures it out and tedious repetetive chase scenes ensue. Reminded me of Logan's Run. I give it 1 toe up. -

Tue, November 29, 2005 - 7:34 PMDeuce Bigelow 2:European Gigilo - not as bad as I would have feared- actually fun in a ridiculous way-like all the made up names for sex acts-The Sneaky Castro, The Portugese Breakfast,The Chili Rainbow, etc. Not for everyone. C+
Bodysong a montage of image and sound showing all facets of life from birth to sex to death to crime to dance- I admit I am a fan of such things so it was an easy sell- the soundtrack was provided by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead- the mix of the beautiful and the horrific make this an interesting journey. B+ -

Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Tue, December 6, 2005 - 5:21 AMCinderella Man- typical underdog story based on true events during the great depression- think Seasbiscuit for the pugilistic set. What saves this flick is Russell Crowe as the Bulldog Jim Braddock-his speech to the promoters for a few schillings so he can save his family is up there with Tom Hank's speech to the troops in Saving Private Ryan-good stuff. B
Dukes of Hazard- lifeless update of the hit TV show-the jokes fall flat and the story is a typical retread.Avoid. D-

Mon, December 12, 2005 - 8:44 PMShopping - a 1994 flick with a young Jude Law as an ex-con who gets his kicks by leading the coppers(lead by Jonathan Pryce) on high speed chases in stolen vehicles.Vaguely interesting rebel without a cause flick- and yes ladies Jude Law is shirtless in a few scenes. C-
Born Yesterday - Judy Holliday is the sympathetic ex-showgirl who is partners with a bullying corrupt millionaire junkman played by Broderick Crawford.Crawford feels that his gf is too stoopid to be hanging with the fancy Washington types - so he hires a smooth talking reporter(William Holden) to learn her some book knowledge and whatnot.Of course Holliday learns too much and falls for the smart guy.Holliday won an Oscar for her performance. This movie is very dated- but still an interesting watch- sort of like "My Fair Lady" meets Anna Nicole Smith or something- adapted from a stageplay. Thu, December 15, 2005 - 2:44 PMGrey Knight:Directors Cut -An odd movie -a civil war movie with um vampires- decently done- from 1992-edited by Monte Hellman -directed by George Hickenlooper- this movie has also been known as Ghost Brigade and Grey Night . Basically a grisly murder is found in a border state with several solidiers crucified- a tracker is sent to find the regiment accused of the murders. This is a decent time-waster of a supernatural murder mystery thing.Look for former WCW champ David Arquette,Billy Bob Thorton, & Martin Sheen. Tue, December 20, 2005 - 12:31 PM12/20 SERENITY!!! Happy dance, cos I'm a geek.

Thu, December 22, 2005 - 12:20 PMah yes. Serenity. one of the best sci-fi films in about 10 years. considering there haven't been that many worth while. and the seris is amazing as well. such a tragedy. Hypno-Toad; where do you live? where i'm at, Firefly is only $30. hmm. interesting. -

Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Thu, December 22, 2005 - 10:15 PM2046- a hypnotic mix of pretty people,noir-sci-fi love story thing. B+
Grizzly Man- entrancing look at a guy determined to live with Grizzly Bears in the wild- captured by Werner Herzog- the guy liked the bears- but he was a naive dreamer stuck in reality- neat documentary. B+
The Football Factory- the soccer hooligan movie with some obvious influences- including a note for note take on the "funny how" scene from Goodfellas.Nothing special or memorable. C -

Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 11:08 PMBlack Narcissis - a stunning film from 1947 about a gaggle of nuns in a palace in a remote part of Asia.Deborah Kerr is the lead in this film as she tries to maintain order and piety in a former retreat for the king's harem.Although this movie was shot entirely on a sound stage it manages to convey the Himlayan village flawlessly. The visuals in this film are top-notch from the gorgeous matte paintings to great transitions - this is one movie I wish I could see in the theater- although the DVD transfer was superb. The DVD contains a 27 minute documentary about the making of the film and the trailer and commentary. It is a joy to watch a movie that totally envelops the senses and makes such a deep impression- from the mulitple issues of faith to the colorful garb of Sabu the flick had me from the first scene to the climax. A+
Night of The Hunter - several stories in one- another classic flick -this one from 1955 starring Robert Mitchum as the bible-spouting killer Harry Powell.Interesting story structure and some great cinematography make this a great mix of suspense and drama.Mitchum is superb(although a little hammy at times) as the insanely righteous woman hating peacher/con. This movie had some swell use of light and shadow. A
American Pie presents Band Camp - straight to DVD and soon to the cutout bins- well Eugene Levy is in this flick- and well this one @ band camp the counselors looked like strippers and we have topless counselors in the shower- and Stiffler's little brother - this is terrible - even for a teen boob-a-rama flick and totally crappy as a camp flick( check out Wet Hot American Summer for a funny take on summer camp). D-
Shooting Gallery - on the cheap pool-hall hustler flick with Freddie Prinze,Jr. , Ving Rhames and Roselyn Sanchez populate this world of betting and violence- nothing new is added to the world- just a time waster straight to video D- -
-
Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Wed, December 28, 2005 - 5:19 PMOnly a D- for AP:Band Camp? I'd have to grow an extra toe on each foot for how many toes down this is. There's better film covering cesspools. There's a reason the major a-hole with no redeeming qualities was not made the leading character in the others. This movie is apparantly targetted towards nerdy male teens who have never seen nekkid boobies and manages to insult them every step of the way. And Ginger Lynn??? proving porn stars do not age well, apparantly their life clocks are fixed at 25.
Wedding Crashers - 2-3 toes up. I usually have a problem and cringe most of the way with stories based on "the big lie" that must eventually come out for the painful dramatic moment. But they manage to pull it off. No changes to the formula. This also has the latest "unrated" ad marketting BS to get sales.
Sin City - recut-remarketted-regurgitated. Basically all the individual stories are no longer intertwined but viewable as separate stories. So, if you were lost and confused as to which story in Basin City you were following in the original this might help. You can also see the individual directors' works. This means that the short opening and closing bits which sandwiched the original are a single standalone story. The re-editing and the small screen also makes it seem just slightly less violent than the original. I'd give this a few toes up if they hadn't been cut off at the knee-cap.
Star Trek: New Voyages. Okay this is a download and not for sale or rent anywhere. A group of trek fans got together and decide to make full episodes to complete the "five year mission" of the original series. Sets flawlessly recreated, decent effects, decent scripts, less than perfect acting. The crew of the Enterprise, Kirk, Spock, et al, all seem a bit too young for the roles. Two episodes have been made so far. These are made as actual full length TV episodes of the period. They begin with the NBC peacock and end with Desilu logo, use the familiar music, sound effects and even have the commercial breaks timed in. Of the two made so far, the second is definitely the better one, so if you're thinking of testing the waters, this would be the one. The first story centers around a trickster super-being, a typcial plotline. The second is a time story that centers around, Captains Kirk, Pike and Decker and the Doomsday Machine planet killer from the original series. You do need to be familiar with the original series. If you think you may end up watching them all then do watch the first one first, it will get you used to the bad acting which you will just have to learn to ignore. But on the plus side, no Shatner. -

Wed, December 28, 2005 - 8:08 PMAll i can say is i'm so glad that DJ Joe has the money to spend to rent things like "Band Camp", "Dukes of Hazard", and "Deuce Bigalow 2." so that those of us don't have to. i mean, i was loaned Dukes and i barely made it through it. i can't imagine even picking up the other two. let alone spending money on them. i would have at least thought you would have rented "Longest Yard" or "40 Year Old Virgin" before either of those. either way, i'm very thankful of the reviews and i will steer clear of them. btw, did you know there is an actual rental review Tribe? just letting ya know. keep it going DJ Joe. it's a wonderful tool. thanks. i just brought home "Marching with the Penguins" tonight. -

Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Sat, December 31, 2005 - 5:37 AMI love 40 Year Old Virgin- saw it in the theater and now own the DVD- even the commentary is hilarious- I also work for a video chain - so I see this stuff for free- sometimes I just finish the things out of inertia I guess-
this week's batch
My Date With Drew - a no-name nebbish wins 1100 on a gameshow pilot and uses his winnings to document his quest for a date with actress/producer Drew Barrymore. He has had a crush on her since the age of 10.At times this is like watching a documentary of the 40 Year Old Virgin - he even has the body hair to match and one of his friends has the action figure collection. This is the ultimate underdog story and the protaginist is so charming that I found myself rooting for him.At times frustrating, humorous and surprising- a fun documentary. B+
Broken Flowers - Jim Jarmusch directed flick about a bachelor(Bill Murray) who recieves an anonymous note from an ex that he sired an offspring 20 years prior. His Krameresque neighbor Winston gets the Murray character to compile a list of his girlfriends from that time period.Winston compiles an intenerary complete with hotels and dossiers on his exes.Bill Murray(Don Johnston) than revisits his exes trying to find out if they were the ones that sent the letter.A nice mix of comedy and drama. B+
Wedding Crashers -over the top buddy comedy about a couple of guys that crash weddings to score bridesmaids.Vince Vaughan is playing the Vince Vaughan character and Owen Wilson is playing the Owen Wilson character- in other words if you have seen Swingers,Old School,Mr & Mr Smith- you know what you are getting from Vaughan- this character does seem to fit his anything for a yuck persona and is slightly less annoying than his turn in Swingers. There is some funny stuff in here- but I was underwhelmed after all of the hype. C -

Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Sun, January 1, 2006 - 9:19 PMFlirting - engaging teen romance movie set in a 1965 Australian boarding school between a stunning Ugandan student(played by Thandie Newton) and a stuttering outcast. This movie also had Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman in it.But the pulse of the movie is the awkward and charming courtship between the 2 leads.I enjoyed the movie alot- but the ending left me rather flat. B+
Wonderboys - a novelist/professor(Micheal Douglas) with tenure has a wild weekend-doggy homicide, failed marriage, unexpected expecting, robbery, snow, hoodjumping, etc. This Curtis Hanson flick has a strong cast and plenty of chuckles- better than the average mid-life crisis story-cuz of the humour. B-
I could not finish The Cave or The Gospel -

Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Mon, January 2, 2006 - 8:26 PMBridge of San Luis Rey - costume drama set in Peru- a man(Gabriel Byrne) is being tried in an inquisition about a book he wrote about 5 folks that perished after a rope bridge gave way- some great performances(Kathy Bates) mixed with some bad casting- Bobby Deniro seemed out of place as the Archbishop. Some beatiful costumes and scenery- but nothing worth seeking out. C
Gangster Story(1960) - Directed by and starring Walter Matthau as a bank robber on the run and co-starring his wife Carol Grace as the librarian that makes him want to give up his career of larceny and homicide.Low budget with huge plot holes - a budget DVD with a bad transfer-

Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Tue, January 3, 2006 - 8:10 PMAtom Age Vampire(Seddok, l'erede di Satana) - a sillybad Italian horror flick about an obsessed doctor that falls for a stripper who he helps heal using cells from donors that he has to kill.I paid a buck for this at Target- it was on a disc with Revolt of The Zombies and a Casper flick- sometimes I need my MST3K fodder- sadly I needed the robots to liven this one up. The only interesting things where photos of Hiroshima survivors and a fused soda bottle. Some funny murder abduction scenes also. D-
Porco Rosso (Kurenai no buta) -charming anime about a seaplane pilot that is a pig.Once again another excellent Hayao Miyazaki flick.A great mix of comedy and imagination. A

Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Tue, January 3, 2006 - 10:07 PMBroken Flowers: 1 1/2 toes. Utterly pointless and completely flat. Bill Murray is a fine actor but they could have just as well hung a photo of him here instead. -

Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Fri, January 6, 2006 - 5:22 AMDirty Deeds - typical teen movie- a high school flick revolving around the 10 Dirty Deeds- a task that is only tried every few years during homecoming weekend. Each task is either embarrassing or dangerous and most of them are illegal- the only real fun of the movie is trying to figure out what the next deed will be.The usual mix of vulgarity, nipples, class warfare and violence. D
The Chumscrubber - a quirky(sort of) high school movie revolving around the suicide of the class pusher and a kidnapping in a suburban cul-de-sac- think Desperate Housewives meets Heathers with a dash of Pump Up The Volume and a smidge o Garden State with some refried Stepford Wives(including Glenn Close as a near robotic widow). All of the kids seem obsessed with drugs and a videogame(The Chumscrubber) about a headless teen in a post-nuclear world. The movie revolves around Jaimie Bell(Billy Elliot) as the surviving best friend of the suicidal best friend/class pusher. The entire town is on some sort of medication- either pills or vitamin supplements. The movie was well executed and had some funny moments and a good cast- Alison Janney,Ralph Finnes,Lauren Holley,Rita Wilson,Justin Chatwin and more. A decent dose of satire and good performances save this project from being a wash. C+
for fans of Peckinpagh- three of his movies are coming out on DVD on Tuesday- Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid, The Ballad of Cable Hogue and Ride The High Country- I was too tired to finish PG last night- but I loved the first 30 minutes of it. -
-
Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Sun, January 8, 2006 - 2:49 PMHustle & Flow -I'll admit I was skeptical - til I saw it- Terrance Howard did an amazing job with a complex character - a low-level street pimp who wants to be a rapper- the entire cast did a good job- even Ludacris as a successful rapper that comes back into town. B+ -
-
Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 4:31 AMOdd Girl Out -I felt while I was watching this one that it was a Lifetime Channel take on Heathers -and sure enough it was a Lifetime movie. We follow Vanessa a cute Freshman/Sophomore aged gal who is on the edges of the popular girl group- but is ostracized when she gets on the radar of the group's bitch who turns her friends against her.An indictment against the pack mentality- decently acted- but not much more than an after-school special on DVD.Probably the least compelling of the 3 high school based DVDs coming out this week. C- -
-
Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 6:03 AMOnce Upon A Time In America- the first part of this movie is stunning,beautiful,great,awe-inspiring- Robert DeNiro is Noodles a former bootleger who has come back to his old town-Most of the movie is a flashback to the age of prohibition- DeNiro & James Woods head up a brash gang of bootleggers- they love each other but of course have differing philosphies on how to get ahead. The second more flawed part of the story takes place in the late 60s- just too many plotholes to fully get behind - overall this is a movie worth seeing- even with the 3rd act problems. B+
THe Eavesdropper- Straight to video suspense action thing about a girl with the ability to hear minds-with John Delancie,George Takei and others C-
The Man-crappy buddy comedy about an ATF man named Van(Samuel L Jackson) and a fish out of water Eugene Levy- a mix of fart jokes, biting and police intimidation make for a crappy 83 minutes. F -
-
Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Sun, January 15, 2006 - 9:02 AMIncident @ Loch Ness - a pseudo documentary about Werner Herzog's attempt to film a documentary about the famed legendary Nessie.Things go from bad to worse -from ill-advised jumpsuits to a centerfold Sonar model it is obvious the producer(Zach Penn) wants to spice up the documentary and add "production" value. This is a fun movie with plenty of chuckles and guffaws throughout- B+
Nausicca - Another great flick from the director of Spirited Away - Hayao Miyazaki- this centers around a princess fromt he Valley of The Wind that has the an ability to communicate with critters, bugs and animals- as always great animation and a good story. A
Junebug- a nice little movie about a small town family meeting the new wife of thier son who has moved to the big city (Chicago) from Winston Salem,N.C.Good ensemble acting in this flick although Amy Adams managed to hijack the flick with her eternally happy Ashley.Lots of beautiful shots of small town America- no strip malls -just lots of green and brick. B+
tried to watch Two For The Money - but Pacino is too much in the hoo-haw mode to keep me watching- I also have Lord of War but it looks like it will get ejected quickly -

Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Mon, January 16, 2006 - 8:09 PMOakland Raiders-The Complete History(2 Disc DVD) - Splendid double disc set capturing the swagger, character and drama of one of the most compelling and villianous franchises in sports history.Disc one had a nice retrospective of the Raiders climb from the AFL cellar to consistent winners- it also had several featurettes on some of the greatest moments in pigskin history from the "Holy Roller" play to the Hiedi Bowl.Disc 2 is why I got the disc- it features an hour presentation of the "Ghost To The Post" game - the double overtime game between the Oakland Raiders and The Baltimore Colts-plus featurettes about the Raiders best rivaleries.

Re: this week's rentals and purchases
Sun, January 22, 2006 - 12:26 PMThe Aristocrats - the biggest inside joke in comedy- the comedians secret handshake - an aftershow tradition with roots in Vaudeville.Basically a simple joke told by comedieans for comedians with tons of crassness, profanity and more crassness.Funny watching folks like Jon Stewart refuse to tell it and folks like Gilbert Godfried revelling in it.Probably not for anyone-a mix of belly laughs and celebs working blue. B-
Mysterious Skin - captivating drama about 2 teen boys dealing with an event that took place 10 years previous.Great performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the street hustler and Brady Corbet as a kid who is convinced he was abducted by a UFO.Captures the endless void of smalltown America and the up and downsides of homosexuality in a rural town. A+
How To Draw A Bunny -documentary about mysterious collage artist Ray Johnson.Hilarious stuff with the artist haggling to get paid for his work.Interesting watching this talented artist find alternative ways of distributing his art.The DVD also includes a good 40 piece photo gallery of several of his pieces. The DVD also has interviews with Roy Lichtenstein,Christo and others from the art world. A
The Weather Underground - documentary about college students and rebels that decided to actively strike back in response to the Vietnam War.Tons of vintage footage and interviews with the former leaders of the rogue outfit flesh out this look @ these notorious revolutionaries.
A
Overnight - a cautionary tale about too much success too soon. This is the story of one man getting discovered and getting rich and pissing it all away.Troy Duffy was "discovered" by Harvey Wienstien of Miramax and given a 300.000 advance and a 15 million dollar budget to make Boondock Saints.Sadly Duffy got too full of himself and managed to alienate his friends, family, bandmates and his patron. This movie is more fun than the cartoonishly violent Boondock Saints - it feels like a mix of Spinal Tap,Decline of Western Civilization 2 & Swimming WIth Sharks. B
The River King - decent suspense thriller about a mysterious drowning death in a small town.Nothing really spectacular- but well told. With Edward Burns and Jennifer Ehle C -

Mad Hot Ballroom -charming documentary about inner-city youths learning ballroom dancing. B+
Male Order Wife - a well made fakumentary about a guy that orders off for a wife from Burma- well the first 30 minutes- after that the plot goes apeshit with too many ludirious turns and twsits- but a solid and engrossing low budget flick. B -
