Fun. 4 out of 5 toes up. I felt it dropped the pace with the big showdown with the villain and the villain's build up. But it's great to see Robert Downey Jr. get decent work. He is one of the finest actors ever.
Don't forget to stay for the scene after the credits. It's worth it.

Re: Iron Man
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 10:03 AMYes I Agree!
Ironman is totally worth seeing!!
I really had no expectations upon seeing this film...I never really followed Ironman the comic as a kid, although I thought he was cool.
I had only kind of sorta keep an ear open on some of the various movie-gossip-themed websites I visit when it came to the production
Hell, my Ex-GF's Mom was an extra on the set of ironman and I think you briefly see her in the Afghan Refugee scene they show!
I really enjoyed this movie immensely
It wa well made..I thought it was along the lines of well made Comic Book Character Themed Movies as "Batman Returns" (With Christian Bale) and the first two Spiderman Movies too
Definitely worth seeing and I am definitely looking forward to Ironman 2 in 2010!! :) -

Re: Iron Man
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 10:42 PMI was very aware throughout the movie how they were handling this. He's an arms dealer. Had his arms ended up in say, Mexico everyone would have screamed and how they dodged the issue. So, I payed attention at whether they would play his enemies as "fanatical ragheads" or what. They dodged the issue of religion quite well and made that villain a warlord with no interest other than gaining power. He designs his suit with the help of brilliant middle eastern doctor who he can't even repay even when he ends up in his village which is under attack. I felt the movie didn't quite carry the shift to the greater villain which was another power mad American. So the bigger message gets botched by poor delivery which was that we create the villains because we are the bigger one to some extent.

he wants to stop selling weapons because he realizes his weapons have ended up in the wrong hands.
the fact is that they were in the wrong hands all along -- namely, the US military.
then he goes "over there" and kicks some ass. yes, a very emotional scene. people suffering violence is horrific.
which is why, once again, the movie fails to be anything other than jingoism because it fails to invite the US as a villain.
it's once again the case of "oh, the singular bad egg (stark's partner, in this case) spoils it for everyone else."
when the reality is that the corporate agenda and the military might that backs it is rotten to the core. -

Re: Iron Man
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 2:38 PMYou realize you are blasting a comic book superhero movie for failing to adopt a political agenda, don't you? It's about as appropriate here as it would be on Teletubbies.
I also take objection that the U.S. military is the "wrong hands". The military goes where it's sent. The responsibility lies with those doing the sending and we could possibly argue all day who that is but not in a stadium for movie reviews. (My personal vote for responsibilty however is uncontrolled corporations and a puppet/muppet government. and then the entire U.S. population in silent agreement.)

Mon, May 19, 2008 - 9:12 AMhypno's comments are so puerile and idiotic, i can't be bothered to come up with a refutation. it's not like he'd understand it anyway.
go back to mos eisly, however it's spelled, kid.

Re: Iron Man
Mon, May 19, 2008 - 12:06 PMPuerile and idiotic? how funny coming from the person to actually use the word "jingoism" in a review for a "comic book" adaptation film. while i can see Gordo's point, it does seem out of place in the context of this film. i mean, we could actually fault Marvel here for not pointing their fingers at the US military back in the 60's when Iron Man was first written, but that also would seem a little inappropriate.
other than that, i would still agree with the film being a 4.5 and easily one of the best comic book adaptation films to date. -

I think it's great that this Tribe allows for discussion and people expressing their opinions over movies they love and hate. But it's completely unnecessary to attack people because they disagree with you.
In any case, nice links Hypno. -
