Short, entertaining, a good summer romp, and true enough to the original characters..

Re: Fantastic Four - Surfer
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 3:37 PMSo, not as bad as the first one?
BTW is it just me or is "Reed Richards" just a bit creepy too old for Jessica Alba? The fake grayed out temples don't help. -

Re: Fantastic Four - Surfer
Tue, June 19, 2007 - 8:12 AMI didn't think the first one was bad, but I kept my expectations low, as most 'comic movies' suck. They made Jessica seem a bit older. Theirs was always one of those swingin' 60's couples, with the late 30's guy and the mid 20's girl..

Tue, June 19, 2007 - 3:33 PMI think to put this in perspective, you should tell us how you rate it compared to the first [which I thought was a steaming dog turd of a movie].
Does it at least have Galactus in it? You can PM me with that one if you think it's a spoiler. -

Re: Fantastic Four - Surfer
Tue, June 19, 2007 - 4:23 PMBeing a FF fan, and only liking Act 3 of the first film, I would give this film a solid 3.5 toes up. While the story wasn't great, it was much more in tune with the comics, and a comic book film. That is to say that it rides that line of reality and sci-fi just enough. The surfer is incredibly well done, as is the Human Torch, still. I would agree that the weakest characters are Reed and Susan, but they are at least more filled out than they were in the first. As for Galactus, he is in the film, just not as you would expect him to be. And while most fans are going to hate how he is depicted, in the context of the film and keeping in mind that most people, fans or not, could not help but laugh at a giant purple man. Anyway, I would recommend seeing it for those that were disappointed by the first because it finally shows the FF as they were meant to be. Definitely a success for any franchise to come back after a dismal first film.

Re: Fantastic Four - Surfer
Tue, June 19, 2007 - 5:49 PMWHAT?! A cloud? I'm sorry but how f'ing lame. Particularly, since the fans of this series defend it's corniness because it's faithful to the comics and considering how Marvel threatened legal action in order to keep "Omnipotus" off The Tick DVDs. Marvel can bite me. This one is going on the wait until it's on my TiVo list. However, I've been told that to truly appreciate the worst CG ever in a film I need to see Mr. Fantastic dance on the big screen.
I think there's a window to see movies like this in theaters, and that window is opening weekend. When the audience is filled with fans who will be sympathetic to the movie and you can kind of ride their high and not be too analytical. -

Re: Fantastic Four - Surfer
Sun, July 15, 2007 - 7:09 PMAnyone else willing to pay an extra buck or two per ticket not to see Stan Lee stick his stupid face in another movie?
Well, saw it. For free. It really wasn't any better than the first one. I think I had one consistent reaction the entire way through. Have you ever seen the Chris Matthews take-off on SNL where he just stands there dead pan shaking his head in disbelief at the stupidity of his guests? A lot like that. At the opening Reed Richards and Sue Storm have pushed Brad and Angelina off the cover of every tabloid but are downgraded to coach and unable to make other arrangements for the really tired gag of oversized Ben Grim squeezing two people in coach. I find it really hard to believe this is the best writing they could come up with.
I guess the studio feels it can serve this as a summer blockbuster on the cheap. No money goes to salaries since Jessica Alba is the only name they have and the special effects are at best adequate. I had no expectations that this would be a good movie or even a fair one just the word going around it was better than the first one. But it's just as bad (or as good) as the first.
You can actually see something that resembles the red silhouette of Galactus in the cloud at the end.
