The Fountain, directed by Darren Aronofsky

I'll give this 3-stars as there could've been more to the script and acting, although the themes are compelling and the visuals are amazing. Here's a link to a more detailed interpretation of the film and how Aronofsky treats the subject of death, from my blog:

I'm curious about this film. I haven't seen it but it seems like something you can either go with and find mystical and entertaining or a complete crock. Your middle of the the road 3 toes up is not what I would have expected. I was hoping for something that might sway me one way or the other towards seeing it.

Welll unfortunately my feelings for this film fall right in the middle. Like I said, the dialogue and acting and a lot of the story has little going for it. But visually it's really well-done and I almost wanna say revolutionary in its special effects imagery. I heard everything was done without computerized animation. And the themes sunk in in a good way after I thought about the film for a few hours. I'd recommend catching it on the big screen if you want a taste of the visuals.

          The Fountain

Beautiful, transcendental, exciting... they don't make movies like this and it's shame. This is one that blows your mind, feeds your heart and washes over you like warm water on a cold day.

I thought this tribe was for movies in theatres. I moderate a tribe for movies on DVD..

As far as I've known it's just been about movies.

re The Fountain. I missed this one in the theater. I really wanted to like this, dark, moody, surreal, mystical and magical. Unfortunately it is slow and dragging with no payoff. I think if there was some sort of reward, enlightenment, solving the puzzle, etc. I don't think I would call it slow and dragging. It's funny because I was just talking about this movie today with a co-worker who complained sitting through the 2 1/2 hours of this movie. No, I told him, it wasn't that long, it only felt that way. (It's barely an hour and a half.) About 2/3rds of the way through you are able to tie all 3 storylines together. Then you wait for the finale, the moment where you exclaim, "That was brilliant!", "I get it!" or just a "That was pretty cool." But it never comes. And it's too bad. I'm probably in the minority of the people that have seen this because the majority of the people that chose to see this movie seemed to like it however the majority of film goers wouldn't.

See that's interesting. For me, not only did the movie flow and never drag (it felt like the 96 minutes it was), I totally felt there was a payoff. It's definitely cerebral, but for me the last 10 minutes were truly awe-inspiring. It's a difficult ending and not one that wraps things in a nice package, but it's a fantastic ending, full of interesting concepts, very much rooted in actual Mayan mythology.

What's brilliant is, if you watch the film again, the ending is explained through the course of the film and the end of the film just brings it to life in very logical fashion. It's challenging but rewarding in that way.
