I am Legend

Unfortunately I can't add anything about previous incarnations of this story, wished I could for perspective. But this version, on it's own, isn't really worth seeing. It has some great thrills, chills and white knuckle moments, I caught myself a couple of times craning my neck to look around corners, but that alone can't carry the movie.

From start to finish, it's a Will Smith movie. Will Smith all the time. Personally I've never really cared for him, but as a dramatic actor I think he's really come into his own and I think I've warmed up to him. He makes the character's struggles compelling and believable. They even did some great character development on the dog too. But that's really all the film is about. Will Smith, well trained dog, zombies, a few high speed car chase scenes, a few things blowing up and you have yourself I Am Legend.

I think the most disappointing thing about the film is the ending. After all the tense action and buildup for the entire length of the film, the production punts on the ending by giving it somewhere in the hood of a mere 15 minutes to wrap it up. Smash bang, scary urban environment, 10 minute drive in the country with cute kid, end of film, probable setup for sequel. I was tempted to boo. Several people did in harmony with groans and "whatevers."

I seriously can't at all recommend this film. I am so glad I didn't have to pay for it - free screenings rawk!

This is actually the fourth incarnation of this story that I am aware of. There could be more. It began as either a novel or short story in which the main character is the last human in a world of vampires. The story is kind of simple and dry. What about it that makes it compelling to be remade is beyond me. I can't even recall if anyone survived in the Heston version. If I see this one it will be because my gf loves the Heston version (unless the dog dies, then she won't want to go).

I know what you mean by a Will Smith movie. He was originally offered the role of Neo in the Matrix but couldn't do it because of scheduling. In an interview after he saw the movie he was glad he had turned it down because he knew he would have tried to infuse his mark on the character. After seeing Keanu Reeves he realized that Keanu did a better job because he simply allowed the character to be, and allowed him to be pulled along by the story.

I have to agree with Skooter. Will Smith and his dog really made this film. The ending was not that impressive, at least not compared to everything before it. With that said, this film gets a thumbs up from me. I know nothing about the original literary version, so I'm judging this merely as a film.

I would have to agree. Will Smith does an amazing job in this film portraying some one who has been alone for 3 years and has yet to see a living person. The little moments where you watch him begin to snap or you see his sanity waver are just priceless. Well done, Will!

And yes, the ending leave much to be desired, but does not hurt the film enough not to give it 4 toes up. Just to see the production value and the amazing sets in this film. It is so impressive to see how far we've come when you watch just how well they created a desolate New York.

And the new Dark Knight trailer is even more worth it.

Well, I got to see it. Company took off work yesterday and went to the movies and paid for my ticket. I just kept thinking of Tom Hanks in Castaway. Maybe I would have enjoyed the movie more if he reprised his "Wilson!" vs. Smith's version. The scene with the dog was just too overly contrived and manipulative to enjoy what was probably a good performance.

Nice trailer for Dark Night but I just IMDB'd Dark Knight and there is no mention of Frank Miller for story. WTF? So, no girl to play Robin, no end of the world apocalypse. I guess it will just be another damn "origin" story.

"I guess it will just be another damn "origin" story. "

Chistopher Nolan has stated that this is not a Joker origin story. The Joker is very much in place an a serious threat already. It is inspired by the comics such as The Dark Knight Returns, but is not a direct adaptation.
